Cell foam

Cell foam is a material that provides virtually unlimited possibilities regarding the shape of the final product.  When the product is designed together with the client, we are able to find the right material that meets the product's needs.

Artekno the pioneer of biodegradable cell foam

Artekno is the first in the Nordic Countries to implement a biodegradable cell foam material in production. The material is a corn starch (PLA) based closed-cell foam, which can partially replace EPS and EPP cell foam, where applicable. The biodegradable cell foam gives the possibility to an ecological solution in a situation, where a product can not reasonable be reused.

Artekno's design service is based on the newest techniques

Our design team has extensive experience of cell foam materials. 3D design and modelling facilitate the interaction between the client and the design team already in the early phases of product development. We use modern processing equipment in the accurate manufacturing of cell foam.

EPP

EPP is cellular polypropylene. It is widely used due to its excellent durability and shock absorbency in demanding packaging solutions i.a. blood and plasma transportation, in automotive industry for example in bumpers, and in venting systems to insulation, sound insulation and air guiding parts.

Typical properties of EPP in the final product:

  • Modifiable density from 30 to 80kg/m³
  • Properties vary according to density
  • Functional properties within range of  -40 … +120°C
  • Good heat insulation properties
  • Excellent durability and shock absorbency
  • Good recovery properties after dynamic or static stress
  • Low water absorbency
  • Good chemical solvents resistance
  • Easy to clean, machine-washable
  • Can be recycled and reused

The typical mould material is aluminium.

EPS

EPS

EPS is cellular polystyrene ("Styrox") that is expanded, closed-cell polystyrene plastic used extensively in construction for its durability and heat insulation properties. EPS is an excellent material for packaging, logistics containers and demanding technical components. EPS is also available as a biodegradable version.

Typical properties of EPS in the final product:

  • Modifiable density from 18 to 100kg/m³
  • Properties vary according to density
  • Functional properties within range of -40 … +75 °C
  • Good heat insulation properties
  • Very shock-absorbent
  • Low water absorbency
  • Can be recycled and reused

The typical mould material is aluminium.

Biodegradable material is corn starch (PLA) based closed-cell foam, which can replace polystyrene cell foam, which is widely used in the construction industry and building because of its durability and thermal insulation.

Typical properties in the final product:

  • Modifiable density from 30-40 kg/m³
  • Properties vary according to density
  • Functional properties max. +80 °C
  • Good heat insulation properties
  • Low water absorbency
  • Industrially compostable

The typical mould material is aluminium.
